“YouTube shows weaken children’s ties to UK culture”?

The Head of Children's TV at the BBC just said that US YouTube creators like Ms Rachel and Blippi are a "risk to British children's connection to our culture."

Their solution?

They want YouTube to "level the playing field" for traditional broadcasters.

Translation: "We can't compete, so please handicap everyone else."

Come on.

The BBC has massive budgets, huge teams, decades of experience, and government funding.

Ms Rachel has a camera, and a deep understanding of what parents and kids want to consume.

Guess who's winning? Ms Rachel.

So much so that Netflix signed her up.

I don’t think the focus should be on algorithms or American creators.

YouTube rewards quality content people watch, consistency, understanding your audience, and engagement.

The BBC should be world-class at all of these things.

They have unlimited resources compared to individual creators.

They have decades of experience.

They have access to the best talent in the country.

And they're losing to individuals working from home.

That should tell you everything.

But instead of looking in the mirror and asking "why are we losing to someone with a fraction of our resources?", they're asking YouTube to protect them.

You don’t have to look far to see this mindset show up across the creator economy:

  • "The algorithm killed my reach."

  • "Instagram doesn't show my posts anymore."

  • "My competitors are just getting lucky."

Meanwhile, other people in your exact same space are thriving.

Same algorithm. Same platform. Different mindset.

They're not asking for protection - they're getting better.

They're learning to compete.

So my question for you:

Are you the BBC or Ms Rachel?

Are you asking for a level playing field, or are you leveling up your game?

Are you blaming external factors, or are you getting better?

Because the market doesn't care what you think you deserve.

It cares about what you deliver.

If the BBC genuinely cares about British children's connection to UK culture, there's a simple solution: make better content.

Think like a creator competing for attention.

That's the game now.

Remember, the creator mindset is all you need to grow 🌱
