Your "small" audience isn't actually small at all

Last week, I spoke to a creator in our community was ready to quit.

His last video had "only" gotten 1,000 views.

After six months of consistent posting, this felt like failure.

Like maybe it wasn't worth the effort anymore.

But he also shared something else during our conversation - he’d recently given a talk at his old university.

Standing in front of ~100 students.

Feeling nervous about the size of the crowd.

The irony?

He'd been disappointed about "only" getting 1,000 views - yet standing in front of 100 real humans felt massive.

This got me thinking about what these audience numbers actually mean in real life.

When we're looking at analytics, it's easy to see these numbers as just digits on a screen.

But try visualising them as actual rooms full of people:

10 viewers? That's a dinner party.

Real humans sitting around a table, choosing to listen to what you have to say.

100 viewers? That's a packed lecture hall.

Every seat filled with someone eager to learn from you.

1,000 viewers? Next time you're in a theatre, look around. That's your audience. Every seat filled with someone who chose to spend time with you instead of watching Netflix, scrolling TikTok, or doing literally anything else.

10,000? That fills the O2 Academy.

100,000? That's Wembley Stadium.

1,000,000? You're filling entire counties.

We've become so desensitised to these numbers because we see huge creators hitting millions of views.

Suddenly thousands feel small.

But your audience is not analytics.

They're actual humans.

With lives and jobs and families.

Who are choosing to spend their time with you.

It’s way too easy to get caught up in the numbers.

To become dissatisfied, unmotivated or even greedy.

I get it, happens to me all too often.

But put your creativity into perspective.

Big numbers are great.

Creating something you’re proud of is even better.

Create for you.

Remember, the creator mindset is all you need to grow 🌱
