Knowing when to quit
Hello and happy Friday,
My third child arrives this week, so the next few editions have been written a bit in advance.
Now, a few things around knowing when to quit:
Two thoughts
I
“Never give up!” is fashionable advice.
But sometimes quitting is exactly the right thing to do.
You have about 60 productive years in your life.
Don’t waste them on the wrong stuff.
II
Quitting doesn’t mean the end.
For the next 4 weeks of paternity leave, I have ‘quit’ my normal job.
But by January all will be back to normal.
Don’t overthink stopping for a while.
It doesn’t make you a failure, and it might be best for everyone.

Jeff Bezos, shortly after founding Amazon.
A year prior, he left a lucrative career in finance at D.E. Shaw.

Ignore this example.
You don’t have to invent Amazon to quit something that isn’t working for you.
One quote
Lin Yutang, inventor and linguist
"The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials."
And finally, One Last Thing:
Have you ever thought back at an unenjoyable period of your career and thought:
“Wow - I wish that had gone on longer!”
I know I haven’t.
