Setting priorities

End your week inspired

Hello and happy Friday,

This week, a few things around setting the right priorities:

One quote

Football journalist Mina Rzouki

“What worries recruitment coaches most is players with ambitions of outdoing the greatest in the game, like Messi or Ronaldo.

The ones they really want are those who simply want to learn and be the best they can be.”

Two thoughts

I

To constantly compare yourself to those at the very top fails to recognise something crucial:

For large swathes of their life, those at the top were at the bottom.

Trying and failing.

It’s vital we all spend time — a lot of time, actually — trying and failing too.

II

The future is not black and white.

You probably won’t end up achieving your wildest dreams.

You’ll achieve far more.

But in a completely different arena.

One picture

Angela Merkel was a scientist for the first half of her career:

Do you think her priority at this time was to be the third-longest serving German leader in history?

Or instead, did she prioritise expanding her skills, her network, her understanding of the world?

And finally, One Last Thing:

What might actually separate those that succeed from those that don’t:

They’re unusually comfortable with not having achieved their dreams yet.

And so they carry on.
