Create, overthink, abandon, repeat
That moment right before hitting publish is absolutely terrifying for most people.
Doesn't matter if you're just starting out or if you've got millions of followers.
That anxiety when you're about to put yourself out there? It's universal.
Which is wild when you think about it.
Even the biggest creators in the world still get nervous about posting content.
I've been in this industry for over a decade, and I've seen this exact same pattern play out hundreds of times:
Spend hours making something
Overthink it
Never hit publish
Repeat until burnout
Sound familiar?
Whether you're running a business, building a personal brand, or just trying to grow your profile - this fear of putting yourself out there is the #1 killer of momentum.
So let's talk about how to get past this, because I'm tired of seeing talented people hold themselves back.
Why this matters:
The stuff we're most nervous about releasing is often the stuff that performs best.
That nervousness usually comes from something being authentic, different, or pushing boundaries.
But the real reason to push through this fear is that it's the ONLY way to learn what works.
No feedback = no growth.
Simple as that.
Here's what works:
1. The "Taxi Test"
This is something that works really well for many creators.
Imagine you're in a taxi, and the driver asks what you do.
You have a 2-minute ride to explain it.
Could you talk about your business/content/idea without feeling like a fraud?
If yes, publish it.
If no, what needs to change?
It sounds ridiculously simple, but this test has saved countless people from overthinking.
2. Set a publishing schedule (and stick to it)
Commit to a regular publishing schedule.
No excuses.
Some weeks your content will be amazing.
Some weeks it will be... less amazing.
But it goes out consistently.
The algorithm rewards it, your audience appreciates it, and your business grows from it.
Block it in your calendar like it's a meeting you can't miss.
Because it's just as important.
3. The "Airplane Mode" technique
When you publish your content, keep airplane mode on for at least hour (if you can).
This stops the obsessive checking for likes/comments/shares that makes the anxiety worse.
By the time you check, people have already engaged, and that first hit of dopamine makes the next publish so much easier.
4. Find your "First Readers"
Successful creators often have a small circle, honest friends who'll tell them if something's good or garbage.
You need the same.
Find 2-3 people who:
Understand what you're trying to do
Will be honest without being cruel
Have good judgment in your industry
And send them stuff BEFORE you publish.
(if you're looking for your own circle of trusted first readers, join us and you'll never have to hit publish alone again).
5. The "So What?" method
Whenever you're hesitating to publish, ask yourself: "So what?"
So what if it flops?
So what if someone disagrees?
So what if it's not perfect?
Seriously... so what?
The internet moves so fast that even massive mistakes are forgotten in days.
But the regret of not putting yourself out there? That sticks around for years.
I'm writing this because I see so many talented creators/business owners/professionals creating AMAZING stuff and then sitting on it because it's "not ready."
It's ready.
In fact, it was probably ready a long time ago.
The greats didn't get to where they are by only releasing perfect content.
They got there by consistently publishing, learning from feedback, and getting better over time.
And they still get nervous.
And they still overthink.
And they still hit publish anyway.
That's the difference.
Remember, the creator mindset is all you need to grow 🌱
