The obvious option
End your week inspired
Hello and happy Friday,
This week, how to become the obvious option…
One thought
Harry Kane, Gareth Southgate, Keir Starmer — England’s captain, manager and (probably) next prime minister.
No comment on politics or football, but ‘success’ often seems to come to safe people.
Ones you can rely on.
People who are so boring, not appointing them seems like a risky option.
One observation
Hires usually have to go through several vetting rounds.
The most likely person to get a thumbs up several times over isn’t the most extravagant or exciting.
It’s the one no one can find any issues with.
One statistic
85% of job roles are filled through networking.
You might see a role at a big company on LinkedIn, but half the time, they’re just doing their due diligence — making sure it seems like an ‘open process’.
People like what they know.
And they hire who they know.
And finally, one last thing…
Familiarity (sadly) trumps merit in most cases.
This is depressing in some ways — but use it to your advantage by networking relentlessly.
